OL2002: Voice Command Tool Bar Disappears After You Select a Profile (292255)

SYMPTOMS

When you select a profile after you start Microsoft Outlook and you click OK to accept that profile, the Voice Command toolbar may disappear.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because the focus of Microsoft Windows is not in Outlook.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, click the Type a contact to find box or the Type a question for help box, and then click Microphone to activate the tool bar.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, click Microphone before you click OK to accept the profile.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

The Voice Command toolbar does not fully activate until you click Microphone, and remains in the background until you activate it. The toolbar is not activated in Outlook when you click an item or a folder.

The Voice Command toolbar and associated tools are not installed by default. You can install the toolbar as an additional item through the Add/Remove programs control panel. To do this:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • In Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, click to select Microsoft Office XP on the Install/Uninstall tab, and then click Add/Remove. -or-

    • In Microsoft Windows 2000, click to select Change or Remove Programs. In the list of installed programs, click to select Microsoft Office XP, and then click Change.
  4. Click to select Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
  5. In the Features to install box, click to expand Office Shared Features.
  6. Click to expand Alternative User Input.
  7. Click the Speech icon, and then click to select Run all from my computer on the shortcut menu that appears.
  8. Click Update to install the speech components.
