This article was previously published under Q292172

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Office Word, when you create a list, and then attempt to change the number (or letter) that the list starts with, Word creates two separately numbered (or lettered) lists.

For example, if you have a numbered list and change the first item's number to 4, Word creates the two separately numbered lists, as in the following example:

This numbered list Changes to two separate numbered lists
1. One 4. One
2. Two 1. Two
3. Three 2. Three
4. Four 3. Four
5. Five 4. Five
6. Six 5. Six

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Select the entire list.
  2. On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering.
  3. Select the number format that you want to use, and then click Customize.
  4. In the Customize Numbered List dialog box, type the number or letter that you want the list to start with in the Start at box, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

NOTE: This issue occurs only when you change the number or letter of the first item in the list. If you change any other item's number or letter, the list is renumbered (or relettered) correctly.
