SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 2002, there is no way to remove, or prevent the selection of, the Merge changes into existing file option that appears when you attempt to replace (overwrite) an existing file.

WORKAROUND

At present, there is no way to work around this issue.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

The Merge changes into existing file option is a new feature in Word 2002. This feature provides an easy way to review, compare, and merge documents.

When you attempt to save a document, and you specify the name of a file that already exists, you receive a dialog box that contains the following: The file file name already exists.

Do you want to:
  • Replace existing file
  • Save changes with a different name
  • Merge changes into existing file
By clicking Merge changes into existing file, you initiate a merge into the selected file. Your edits are added to the original in the form of revision markup.

The document merge is accomplished by using the Compare and Merge Documents feature. When you merge documents, your local copy is closed and the original document is opened in your Word session with the Track Changes feature turned on. Track Changes balloons display your revisions that have been merged to the original document. You can review, accept, or reject these changes, or leave them visible in the document.

After the document is merged, you must save the original to retain the changes.
