WD2002: Hidden Bookmarks Remain After You Remove \h Switch from TOC Field (292151)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002

This article was previously published under Q292151

SYMPTOMS

Hidden bookmarks may not be removed as expected when you update the table of contents. This can occur under the following conditions:
  • You delete the table of contents (TOC).

    -or-
  • You delete the \h (hyperlink) switch from the table of contents (TOC) field

CAUSE

When Word inserts a table of contents, Word adds the \h switch by default. The \h switch inserts table of contents entries as hyperlinks when the document is viewed as an HTML page. The \h switch also generates hidden bookmarks as targets in the document for the table of contents hyperlinks.

However, when the \h switch is removed from the TOC field, or if the table of contents is deleted, the hidden bookmarks are not removed from the document. (To view the contents of the TOC field, press ALT+F9.)

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, manually remove the hidden bookmarks. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open your Word document. On the Insert menu, click Bookmarks.
  2. Click to select the Hidden check box in order to view the list of hidden bookmarks.
  3. In the list of bookmarks, click the bookmark that you want to remove, and then click Delete.
  4. Repeat Step 3 for each bookmark that you want to remove.
  5. Click Close.

STATUS
