WD2002: Undo Command Does Not Remove List Style Link to Paragraph Style (292150)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002

This article was previously published under Q292150

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word, if you link a list style to a paragraph style and then use the Undo command on the Edit menu to undo the changes to the paragraph, the list style link may unexpectedly remain in the Style Gallery preview. If you apply the list style to any portion of the document, the list style formatting may be reapplied to any paragraph or section of text that uses the paragraph style that the list style was originally linked to.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the list style that you created contains a link to the paragraph. When you click Undo on the Edit menu to remove the changes to the paragraph, you do not change the custom list style that you created.

When you apply this list style to any other area of the document, the link to the paragraph style is still active, and the list style is then applied to any paragraph or section of text that uses the given paragraph style.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, remove the link to the paragraph style. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering.
  2. In the Bullets and Numbering dialog box, click the Outline Numbered tab.
  3. Select the Style Gallery preview in which you created the link, and then click Reset.
  4. In the Microsoft Word dialog box, click Yes.
  5. In the Bullets and Numbering dialog box, click OK.
Notice that the numbering in the paragraph is removed. You can now apply this format to any list and the numbering is not reapplied to the linked paragraph style.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
