WD2002: Word Stops Responding When You Save a Document in Rich Text Format (292140)

When you attempt to save a document as a Rich Text Format (RTF) file, Microsoft Word 2002 stops responding (hangs).
You receive the following message in the status bar:
Word is saving file name.rtf
The document is not saved and you are unable to quit Word.
CAUSE
This problem can occur in the following situation:
- You open a document that was created using Word 97 or earlier.
-and- - The document contains a numbered list.
-and- - You turn on the Track Changes features (on the Tools menu, click Track Changes).
-and- - You change the paragraph formatting of the numbered list in the document.
-and- - You save the document as a Rich Text Format (RTF) file.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, save the document in a file format other than Rich Text Format (RTF).
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
