Error message calling for newer version of MT Extra font when you use MathType tool (292132)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the MathType program, you receive an error message stating that a newer version of the MT Extra font is needed, because not all of the required characters are available.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if all the following conditions are true:
  • You have MathType 4 installed on your computer.
  • After you installed MathType 4, you installed or used "Detect and Repair" in Microsoft Word or in Microsoft Office XP.
  • Your version of Office XP has the Equation Editor installed.
NOTE: Word and Microsoft PowerPoint are the two Office XP programs that are most likely to be affected by this issue.

MathType installs version 4.2 of Mtextra.ttf in the C:\Windows\Fonts folder. Both the Office XP Setup program and the Detect and Repair utility install version 3.1 Mtextra.ttf in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Equation folder, and then register that file as the current source of the MT Extra font.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Quit all Office programs.
  2. Reinstall MathType or run the MathType 4 Fonts Setup program.
  3. Start Windows Explorer and open the C:\Windows\Fonts folder.
  4. Click mtextra.ttf, and then click Copy on the Edit menu.
  5. Open the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Equation folder, and then click Paste on the Edit menu.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

When you run the MathType 4 Font Installer, you receive the following warning message: These fonts may be overwritten when you install a word processor that includes Equation Editor (e.g., Microsoft Word, Corel WordPerfect, or AppleWorks). We recommend you run MathType 4 Fonts Setup after installing the word processor. This is also true if you install or re-install any version of MathType earlier than version 4.
