WD2002: "Check for New Actions" Command Is Still Displayed on Shortcut Menu After You Select Security Option (292128)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002

This article was previously published under Q292128

SYMPTOMS

After you click to select the Remove personal information from this file on save check box (on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Security tab), and then save and close the document, Check for New Actions is still displayed on the smart tags shortcut menu when you reopen it.

WORKAROUND

For added security you can remove the option Embed Smart Tags on the Save tab of the Options dialog box. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click New.
  2. In the New Document task pane, click Blank Document.
  3. On the Tools menu, click Options, click to select Embed Smart Tags on the Save tab, and then click OK.
Smart tags are available while you create the document but are not available after you save and reopen the document.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Smart tags allow you to interact with other programs from within the current document. For example, you can add a person's name and address to a Microsoft Outlook contact folder without specifically copying and pasting the data into Outlook.

The other program may be available on your computer, or it may be available as a network resource, accessed through the Universal Naming Convention (UNC). These external programs may start events on your computer when you click the Check for New Actions item on the smart tag's shortcut menu. This behavior may be exactly what you want in some circumstances, but at other times, you may want to provide extra security by disabling smart tags after you have saved your document. For more information about smart tags, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type smart tags in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.
