WD2002: Font Format Is Lost When You Insert Row or Column (292120)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002

This article was previously published under Q292120

SYMPTOMS

Some text formatting may be lost when you insert a new row or column in a table. This behavior occurs after you use the AutoFormat feature on a table.

For example, if you use AutoFormat on a table with the Table Grid 8 style, your table would look similar to the following.
Salesperson January February March QTR Totals
Sales Person 1 $50,000.00 $25,000.00 $15,000.00 $90,000.00
Sales Person 2 $10,000.00 $15,000.00 $35,000.00 $60,000.00
Sales Person 3 $20,000.00 $25,000.00 $35,000.00 $80,000.00
Totals $80,000.00 $65,000.00 $85,000.00 $230,000.00
However, when you place the insertion point in the last cell of the table and press TAB to start a new row, the font formatting (in this example, bold) is lost, as in the following example.
Salesperson January February March QTR Totals
Sales Person 1 $50,000.00 $25,000.00 $15,000.00 $90,000.00
Sales Person 2 $10,000.00 $15,000.00 $35,000.00 $60,000.00
Sales Person 3 $20,000.00 $25,000.00 $35,000.00 $80,000.00
Totals $80,000.00 $65,000.00 $85,000.00 $230,000.00

NOTE: Similar behavior may occur with text entered in the last column of a table. If you insert a new column after the last column, formatting in that column may be lost.

CAUSE

This problem can occur when you select either the Last row or the Last column check box the Table AutoFormat dialog box.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Use AutoFormat on the Table After You Type Text

Create your Word table and type all of the text or data before you use AutoFormat on the table. To use AutoFormat on your table, follow these steps:
  1. Click inside your Word table.
  2. On the Table menu, click AutoFormat.
  3. In the Table AutoFormat dialog box, select the table style that you want in the Table styles list.
  4. Click to select the Last row or Last column check box (as needed).
  5. Click Apply.

Method 2: Manually Format Table and Text

After you enter all of the text that you want in the cells of your table, manually format the font style that you want in each cell. To manually format the font style of text, follow these steps:
  1. Select the text that you want to format.
  2. On the Formatting toolbar, click the formatting that you want to use, for example, Bold or Italic.
