SYMPTOMS

The following behavior may occur when you attempt to add a word that is not recognized by the spelling checker to an Italian custom dictionary. The added word does not appear in the Italian custom dictionary word list, even though the spelling checker no longer flags it as a spelling error.

CAUSE

You have set the language for the Italian custom dictionary to Italian (Italy).

WORKAROUND

Set the language for the Italian custom dictionary to All languages. To make this setting, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. In the Options dialog box, click the Spelling & Grammar tab, and then click Custom Dictionaries.
  3. In the Custom Dictionaries dialog box, under Dictionary list, select the Italian custom dictionary that you have created (for example, Italian.dic), and then click Modify.
  4. In the Italian.dic dialog box, select All languages under Language, and then click OK twice.
  5. In the Options dialog box, click Close.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The unrecognized words that you add to the Italian custom dictionary actually do appear in the dictionary file (.dic) when you view the file in Notepad and the spelling checker no longer flags them as errors in subsequent documents.
