WD2002: Numbered Lists Are Not Renumbered Correctly When the First Number Is Changed (292092)

SYMPTOMS

When you change the number of the first item in a numbered list to a number that is greater than one, the subsequent items are not renumbered correctly. Instead, the second item is treated like the first item in a new list, and is numbered "1." The subsequent items are renumbered according to the new sequence.

For example, if you renumber the first item as "4.", the second item is not renumbered "5." as expected, but instead, becomes "1." The subsequent items are renumbered as "2., 3., 4.," and so on.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, select all the items and renumber the list, specifying the new starting number for the first item. In order to renumber a list starting at a number greater than one, follow these steps:
  1. Select all the items in the list.
  2. On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering.
  3. In the Bullets and Numbering dialog box, select the numbering style that you want, and then click Customize.
  4. In the Customize Numbered List dialog box, set the number in the Start at box to the starting number that you want (for example, 5), and then click OK.

    The first list item has the starting number that you specified, and the subsequent items are numbered in sequence accordingly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
