WD2002: Heading List Numbering Is Incorrect When You Change "Start At" Number (292077)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002

This article was previously published under Q292077

SYMPTOMS

If you create an Outline Numbered list that uses one of the Heading formats, and then you change the list numbering by changing the Start at number (in the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog box) more than once on any given list item, the numbering of the list before the item that you change becomes incorrect.

The list items that appear before the changed item adopt the numbering of the first number that you changed in the Start at box.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you change the number in the Start at box on the same list item more that once.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, place the insertion point at the beginning of the item that you want to start the new numbering with, and then press the BACKSPACE key. When the list number is deleted, type the new number that you want the remainder of the list's numbering to start with, and then press the SPACEBAR key.

Notice that the list numbering is changed as expected. You may change the list numbering as many times as you want by using this method.
If you notice that the indent increases after pressing SPACEBAR, press SHIFT+TAB to decrease it.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
