This article was previously published under Q292076

SYMPTOMS

Grammatical errors in the header, footer, and comment areas of a Microsoft Word document may not be detected at the time that they are typed, nor are they found when the spelling and grammar are checked.

CAUSE

Word does not check the grammar of text in headers, footers, or the comments contained in your document.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. In the header, footer, or comment, select the text that you want to check.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Cut.
  3. Close the header, footer, or comment.
  4. In the main body of the document, press ENTER to create a new paragraph.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Paste.

Word now flags the errors for correction.
  6. After you have corrected any errors that were detected, select the text.
  7. On the Edit menu, click Cut.
  8. Position the insertion point in the header, footer, or comment at the location where you want to place the corrected text.
  9. On the Edit menu, click Paste.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
