WD2002: Word Unexpectedly Continues Numbered Lists Between Subdocuments (292073)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002

This article was previously published under Q292073

SYMPTOMS

When you create a master document that contains subdocuments, which in turn contain numbered lists, Microsoft Word may unexpectedly continue the sequence of numbering in the lists between the inserted subdocuments.

NOTE: This behavior can also occur if you apply the Restart Numbering command to a numbered list, and then insert the document into a master document.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, restart the numbering of the incorrect numbered list (or lists) in the master document. To do this, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Apply Restart Numbering

Reapply restart numbering for subdocuments from within the master document. To do this, right-click the number that you want to restart at 1, and then click Restart Numbering on the shortcut menu that appears.

Method 2: Apply "Start at" Numbering

Apply "Start at" numbering for each subdocument from within the master document. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the numbered list item that you want to change.
  2. Click Bullets and Numbering on the shortcut menu that appears.
  3. Select the numbered style that you want, and then click Customize.
  4. In the Customize Numbered List dialog box, enter a new starting number for the list in the Start at box, and then click OK.

NOTE: If you modify the text before and after the highlighted number scheme in the Number format box, be sure you don't delete the highlighted number scheme, unless you want to remove numbering from the currently selected level.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
