WD2002: Spelling Errors Are Not Flagged After You Change the Formatting of Text in Your Document (292040)

SYMPTOMS

If you change the formatting of text in your document and then run the spelling checker, Microsoft Word may display the following message even if some of the words in your document are misspelled:

The spelling and grammar check is complete.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the text is formatted in a decorative or symbol font. Word does not check the spelling of text formatted in any of the following fonts:

Arial CE
Arial Cyr
Arial Greek
Arial Narrow Special G1
Arial Special G1
Arial Special G2
Bookshelf Symbol 1
Bookshelf Symbol 2
Courier Greek
Courier New CE
Courier New Cyr
Marlett
Monotype Sorts
MS LineDraw
MS Outlook
Symbol
Times New Roman CE
Times New Roman Cyr
Times New Roman Greek
Times New Roman Special G1
Wingdings
Wingdings1
Wingdings2

NOTE: There may be other symbol or decorative fonts not listed here that also cause this issue.

To determine whether your font is a symbol or decorative font, follow these steps:
  1. On the Insert menu, click Symbol.
  2. On the Symbols tab, click the down arrow in the Font list.
If the font that you are using is displayed in this list, the font is considered a symbol or decorative font, and any text formatted with this font will not be checked for spelling errors.
