OL98: "This Program Has Performed Illegal Operation" Error Message When You Close Outlook (292012)

SYMPTOMS

When you click the Close button (X) to quit Outlook 98, the following error message may appear:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, rename specific files and then reinstall Outlook 98:
  1. Close the error message, and then quit all programs that are currently running.

    If there is an antivirus program that you cannot turn off, remove the program. Antivirus programs can prevent certain operating system resources from being updated. They can also prevent proper registration of programs in the Windows registry. If you remove your antivirus program, remember to reinstall it after you completing the following procedure.
  2. Click Start on the taskbar, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  3. Locate and rename the following files:

    Emsabp32.dll
    Emsmdb32.dll
    Emsui32.dll
    Emusuix32.dll

  4. Reinstall Outlook 98.
