SYMPTOMS

When the thread-topic property of a Cdosys e-mail message is returned, the property appears encoded instead of decoded. A Cdosys program that needs to use this property cannot do so.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the MIME stream accepts only ASCII characters, which causes some encoding to occur in the message stream. However, when a program receives the message, the decoding of the Cdosys message property does not occur and the encoded text appears.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.

MORE INFORMATION

Cdosys is a component of Windows 2000 and is required for Windows 2000 to run properly. One of the properties of a Cdosys message is the thread-topic, which is usually the subject. If this property is localized in non-ASCII character sets, some encoding occurs because the MIME stream accepts only ASCII characters. The thread-topic property is therefore encoded in the message stream, but the property must be returned decoded from the Cdosys message property. Currently, the encoded string is returned, and a Cdosys program that needs to use this property cannot use this property unless the Cdosys program decodes the string.
