SYMPTOMS

When you open a hypertext link that has been pasted into an e-mail message, the Internet Explorer Home page is opened instead of the Web page that is connected to the link that you clicked.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol file type has an incorrect value in the Topic box for the Open function.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue in Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98:
  1. Double-click My Computer, and then click Folder Options on the View menu.
  2. Click the File Types tab, click URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol in the Registered file types list, and then click Edit.
  3. Click Open in the Action box, and then click Edit.
  4. In the Topic box, type WWW_OpenUrl.
  5. Click OK twice, and then click Close.
To resolve this issue in Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me):
  1. Double-click My Computer, and then click Folder Options on the Tools menu.
  2. Click the File Types tab, click URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol in the Registered file types list, and then click Advanced.
  3. Click Open in the Action box, and then click Edit.
  4. In the Topic box, type WWW_OpenUrl.
  5. Click OK twice, and then click Close.
