ISA Server Control service may not start and an event ID 11002 message may be logged (291836)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server, the ISA Server Control service may not start, and the following event ID 11002 message may be logged.
Microsoft ISA Server Control failed to start.

The failure occurred during Service initialization because the configuration property msFPCSiteName of key LDAP://server.domain.com/CN={Array GUID},CN=Arrays,CN=Fpc,CN=System,DC=domain,DC=com is not valid. Use the source location 114.260.3.0.1200.50 to report the failure. The error code in the Data area of the event properties indicates the cause of the failure. For more information about this event, see ISA server help.

The error description is: The parameter is incorrect.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you installed ISA Server in Array mode, and the Microsoft Windows 2000 site name that the server belongs to contains lowercase characters.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use either of the following methods:
  • Method one:
    1. Remove ISA Server, and then install only the ISA Server Administrator Tools on another computer in the site.
    2. Use the ISA Server Administrator Tools to create an array.
    3. Install ISA Server on the correct server, and then join the existing array.
  • Method two:
    1. Start the Active Directory Sites and Services snap-in.
    2. Click to expand the site name where you are installing ISA Server.
    3. Rename the site name to use only uppercase characters. For example, use SITENAME.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
