XADM: DAPI Upgrade Breaks Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator Program Import/Export (291829)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5

This article was previously published under Q291829

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade a workstation that has the Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program on it to Microsoft Exchange 2000 (and the Exchange System Manager), the Import/Export functionality of the Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program is broken.

This Administrator program-to-Exchange System Manager-only upgrade to Exchange 2000 is necessary to support administration of both Exchange Server 5.5 and Exchange 2000 computers from the same workstation.

When you try to import or to export by using the Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program after such an upgrade, one or both of the following event IDs may be logged in the application log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeDSImp
Event Category: None
Event ID: 240
Description:
The following error was encountered when attempting to generate or validate e-mail addresses for username. The binding handle is invalid. Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeDSImp
Event Category: None
Event ID: 269
Description:
Error 2147500037 occurred while attempting to throw away the mail of username.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Dapi.dll file is updated by the Exchange 2000 upgrade process. This file should not be upgraded on a system that still has the Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program loaded on it.

WORKAROUND

There are two steps to workaround this behavior.
  1. Close all instances of the Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program.
  2. Replace the %SystemRoot%\System32\Dapi.dll file (version 6.0.4417.00) and C:\Program Files\Microsoft Integration\Microsoft Exchange 2000\Dapi.dll file with the Dapi.dll file from the Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 4 CD-ROM.
