OL2000: ICQ Integration Causes an Address Security Warning When You Select Different Mail Items (291572)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Outlook 2000, Service Release 1 (SR-1)
This article was previously published under Q291572 SYMPTOMS
Every time you click a different mail item in Microsoft Outlook 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) or when you switch back to your Inbox folder and select a mail item, you receive the a prompt with the following Security Warning dialog box:
A program is trying to access e-mail addresses you have stored in Outlook. Do you want to allow this? If this is unexpected, it may be a virus and you should choose No.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when you download and install the ICQ 2000 utility on a computer that has Outlook 2002. The ICQ program automatically installs the ICQ Express add-in, which is an Outlook Component Object Model(COM) add-in that tries to retrieve recipient information on every selection change that you make in Outlook.
Attempting to trust the ICQ add-in by using Outlook's new Trusted COM add-in functionality does not work because the ICQ add-in was not written to take advantage of that functionality.
This is a know issue of how ICQ "integrates" with Microsoft Outlook 2000 SR-1.
WORKAROUND
The work around this problem, turn off the ICQ COM add-in in Outlook. To do this:
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- On the Other tab, click Advanced Options.
- Click COM Add-Ins.
- Click to clear the ICQ Express check box.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
