You cannot add a rule between computers if one computer created a client-only rule in Outlook 2003 and in Outlook 2002 (291514)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

This article was previously published under Q291514

SYMPTOMS

Client-side rules do not function correctly when you use two separate computers to create rules for your mailbox in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and in Microsoft Outlook 2002. When you create a client-side rule on the first computer, the following error messages occur with the second computer in the Rules Wizard:
Rules Error: Cannot remove messages from the folder
A value in the 'Rule description' box has not been set.
To set a value, click underlined words at the bottom of the Rules Wizard.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the second computer does not have the information that is needed to process the client-side action.

For example, the Move items to a specified folder rule is set for a personal folders (.pst) file on the first computer. The second computer does not have a .pst file and does not have a specified folder to move the item to.

RESOLUTION

Microsoft recommends that you do not use client-side rules when using multiple computers to access the same mailbox.
