OL2002: Contacts Are Not Usable by Outlook 98 When You Upgrade to Outlook 2002 (291511)

SYMPTOMS

If you use Outlook 98 to send messages to a contact, you receive an undeliverable message (non-delivery report). If you view the e-mail properties of the contact by using Outlook 98, incorrect data appears for both the E-mail Type and E-mail Address fields.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because Outlook 2002 upgraded the properties of the e-mail address in the contact. When you use Outlook 98 to connect to a Microsoft Exchange 2000 e-mail store, Outlook 98 cannot properly read the upgraded e-mail properties.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use Outlook 2002 or Outlook 2000 when you need to send to contacts.

WORKAROUND

If Outlook 2002 is being uninstalled and is no longer being used, you can use one of the following two methods to work around this problem. In the first method, delete the contacts and import an old Personal Address Book. The second method requires that you open each contact and type the correct information into the properties of the e-mail address.

How to Import the Old Personal Address Book

Before you start this step, add the old Personal Address book to your e-mail profile. See the Outlook Help file for assistance.
  1. Create a new Contacts folder, and move the contacts to that folder.
  2. On the File menu, click Import and Export.
  3. Click Import from another program or File, and then click Next.
  4. In File type to import from, click to select Personal Address Book, and then click Next.
  5. In Select destination folder, click to select your Contacts folder, and then click Next.
  6. Click Finish.
The contacts are imported from your Personal Address Book to your Contacts folder.

How to Edit Each Contact E-mail Entry

This method requires that you know the complete x400 address of the contact if you imported the contact from the Global Address List. It may be easier to delete the contact and re-import it from the GAL to your Contacts folder.
  1. Open a contact.
  2. Double-click the e-mail address.
  3. Type the correct e-mail address for the contact.
  4. If the address is to a recipient on the Internet, type SMTP in the E-mail Type field.
  5. Click Save and Close to save the corrections.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The incorrect e-mail properties that you see that the E-mail address and the E-mail Type fields have a truncated version of the display name in them.

This occurs after you use Outlook 2002 to import old PAB entries to the Exchange 2000 e-mail store's Contacts folder and open the Exchange 2000 e-mail store's contacts with Outlook 98. This does not happen when you use Outlook 2000 to view the updated contacts.
