Upgrade from Commerce Server 2000 Evaluation Edition Causes Setup to Stop Responding During Timebomb Warning Period (291386)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Commerce Server 2000

This article was previously published under Q291386

SYMPTOMS

When you are upgrading from the Commerce Server 2000 Evaluation Edition, the Setup program may stop responding due to an error that causes the installer to fail. When this occurs, you cannot restart the setup process. This problem only occurs within 10 days of the Evaluation period expiration. Registering the DLLs during the timebomb warning period causes the Regsvr32.exe to stop responding as well.

CAUSE

A message box is created by the expiration code. However, due to the service context, it cannot be displayed, which results in a hung thread.
