WORKAROUND

- Set the Mail profile for SQL Mail to the Default profile.
-or- - Explicitly start SQL Mail by using xp_startmail.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in SQL Server 2000. This problem was first corrected in SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1.MORE INFORMATION
SQL Server 2000 does not start SQL Mail when the server starts. Instead, the first call to xp_sendmail, xp_readmail, xp_findnextmsg, xp_deletemail, or sp_processmail starts SQL Mail. Although xp_startmail does check for a configured mail profile other than the default profiles, the other procedures do not.
