XADM: Exchange Server 5.5 Users Cannot See Exchange 2000 Mailboxes in the Global Address List (291170)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5

This article was previously published under Q291170

SYMPTOMS

In a Mixed-mode environment, Exchange Server 5.5 users may be unable to see Exchange 2000 mailboxes in the Global Address List if these Exchange 2000 mailboxes reside on a server that is not in the mixed site. For example, if the server resides in another Exchange 2000 administrative group or another mixed site for which the local mixed site does not have an Exchange Server 5.5 directory replication path, the Exchange Server 5.5 users are unable to see the Exchange 2000 mailboxes in the Global Address List.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the recipient Connection Agreements are pointing to an Exchange Server 5.5 computer rather than the Site Replication Service (SRS) on an Exchange 2000 computer in the local mixed site. The Exchange Server 5.5 directory does not allow the Active Directory Connector (ADC) to create recipients in any other naming context other than the local mixed site.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:
  1. Modify any Recipient Connection Agreements for this mixed site so that they point to the Exchange 2000 computer that is running the SRS.
  2. Change the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) port to 379, which is the default LDAP port used by the SRS. To do so:
    1. Start the Active Directory Connector Management tool from the Administrative Tools or Microsoft Exchange program group.
    2. Open the properties of the recipient Connection Agreement in question, click the Connections tab, and then change the server name and port number in the Exchange Server Information section.
By default, the SRS is located on the first Exchange 2000 computer that joins the Exchange Server 5.5 site. To determine which Exchange 2000 computer is running the SRS:
  1. Start the System Manager program from the Microsoft Exchange program group on an Exchange 2000 computer in the mixed site.
  2. Click to expand the Tools container, and then click the Site Replication Services container in the left pane.

In the right pane, an SRS object is displayed followed by the name of the Exchange 2000 computer that is running the SRS in parenthesis. You may need to expand the NAME column in System Manager to see the entire name of the SRS.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior is a limitation of the Exchange Server 5.5 Directory Database (Dir.edb). The SRS allows the ADC to create recipients that reside in a site or administrative group naming context other than the local mixed site in the SRSMain.edb database. The SRS then replicates these objects to the Exchange Server 5.5 computer in the mixed site by using Intrasite Directory Replication.
