SYMPTOMS

When you apply bullets or numbering to a list in Word 2002, or you press ENTER at the end of a manually numbered line, the list is automatically indented, and a small icon with a lightning bolt is displayed to the left of the list.

For example:
1. This is a manually numbered line. When you press ENTER at the end of this line, this automatically produces the following.

   1. This is a numbered line. When you press ENTER at the end of this line, this automatically produces the following.
   2. This is the new line.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. AutoIndenting is a feature of Word 2002 when you are working with bulleted lists or numbered lists. The small icon with a lightning bolt is part of the Autocorrect feature in Word 2002.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Use Autocorrect Options

  1. Click Autocorrect Options to the left of the numbered list.
  2. Do one of the following:

    • Click Stop Automatically Creating Numbered Lists.
    • Click Control Auto Correct Options, and then click to clear the Automatic numbered lists check box.

Method 2: Turn Off Automatic Numbering or Automatic Bulleting of Lists

NOTE: Use this method before you type the text for your numbered or bulleted list. If your numbered or bulleted list has already been typed, use Method 3.

You can turn off the automatic numbering or automatic bulleting of lists. However, you then have to apply this formatting manually.
  1. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options.
  2. Click the AutoFormat As You Type tab, click to clear the Automatic numbered lists check box for numbered lists. For bulleted lists, click to clear the Automatic bulleted lists check box.
  3. Click OK.

Method 3: Decrease the Indent for the List

To reset the automatically applied indentation of your list:
  1. Select your numbered or bulleted list.
  2. On the Formatting toolbar, click Decrease Indent.
