Underscore in a Network Resource Name for Windows 2000 Cluster Could Not Be Created (290816)

SYMPTOMS

When you are using the Cluster Administration tool or Cluster.exe tool to try to add a network resource name that contains an underscore (_) character, you may receive an error message that indicates the resource name contains invalid characters.

CAUSE

The clustering code treats the underscore (_) character as an error, and does not permit their use. This is a regression from Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, when the clustering code interpreted that underscore characters were allowed.

RESOLUTION

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, note that you can create it manually in the cluster hive.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
