  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q290721

SYMPTOMS

When you perform a mail merge by using Microsoft Word 2000, you receive the following error message if you select the Outlook Address Book as your data source:
Winword caused an exception c0000006h in module schdmapi.dll.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if Outlook is not registered as your default e-mail client, or if the Schdmapi.dll file is damaged.

RESOLUTION

Set Outlook 2000 as Default E-mail Client

To resolve this behavior, verify that Outlook is listed as the default e-mail client. To set Outlook 2000 as your default e-mail client, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Outlook.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double click Internet Options, and then click the Programs tab.
  4. In the E-mail and Contact List lists, click Microsoft Outlook, and then click OK to save the changes.

Install a New Schdmapi.dll File

If setting Outlook as the default e-mail program does not resolve this behavior, you must rename and reinstall the Schdmapi.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Find (for Microsoft Windows 2000 Millennium Edition, point to Search), and then click Files or Folders (for Microsoft Windows 2000/Windows Me, click For Files or Folders).
  2. In the Named box, type schdmapi.dll.
  3. In the Look in dialog box, click to select My Computer. In addition, if you are using Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98, verify that the Include sub folders option is selected. Click either Find Now or Search Now.
  4. Right-click schdmapi.dll from the list of found files, and then click Rename.
  5. Type schdmapi.old, and then press ENTER.
After you complete these steps, try the mail-merge operation again. When you start the Mail Merge Wizard and select the Outlook Address Book as your data source, Setup will detect that the Schdmapi.dll file is missing and will automatically attempt to replace this file.

Run Office 2000 Repair Utility

If, for some reason, the Schdmapi.dll file is not replaced and you receive another error message, you must run the Office 2000 Repair Utility. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Close all programs, and then turn off any anti-virus programs on your computer.
  2. Insert the Office 2000 CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  5. Click Microsoft Office 2000 the list of installed programs, and then click Add/Remove.
  6. Click Repair Office, and then select Repair Errors in Office Installation.
  7. Click Finish.
  8. Restart the computer.

MORE INFORMATION

To select the Microsoft Outlook Address List as your data source, follow these steps:

  2. In the Mail Merge Helper, click Get Data and then click Use Address Book.
  3. In the Use Address Book dialog box, click to select Outlook Address Book, and then click OK.
