ScanDisk Runs After You Shut Down Your Computer Normally (290668)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
This article was previously published under Q290668 SYMPTOMS
When you start your computer after you shut it down normally, you may receive a message that indicates that you did not shut down your computer properly, and ScanDisk may run automatically. When you shut down your computer normally, you may not have received the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" message.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, disable Advanced Power Management (APM) in the computer's basic input/output system (BIOS). For information about how to do so, please view the documentation that is included with your computer, or contact your computer manufacturer.
It is possible to lose data as a result of the improper shutdown. During the shutdown process, the contents of the virtual cache are written to the destination device. If the destination device is an Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) hard disk, data may be written to the hard disk's onboard cache but not to the disk itself. When this occurs, the data is lost from the cache when the computer turns off. For additional information, click the article number below
