Software Input Panel Interferes with PowerPoint Slide Show After You Suspend Device (290546)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows CE for the Palm-size PC, Versions 3.01
This article was previously published under Q290546 SYMPTOMS
If you start a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation and then suspend and resume your Windows CE device, you may not be able to change PowerPoint slides by tapping the screen. Additionally, when you tap the screen, "box" (hollow square) characters may be displayed over the top of the presentation.
CAUSE
This problem can occur if "power on password protection" is enabled on Asian-language versions of Handheld PC (HPC) Pro and HPC 2000.
When Windows CE starts, a software input panel (SIP) is loaded that you can use to enter the password. If PowerPoint is already running in Slide Show mode, Windows CE does not disable the SIP. Instead, Windows CE paints over the SIP, which causes the SIP to appear to be unloaded until you tap an area of the screen that is controlled by the SIP.
PowerPoint paints the entire screen without alerting other programs. Because the SIP is still loaded and is the topmost window, the SIP properly intercepts a tap in the (invisible) SIP client area. The SIP repaints the button that you click, but not the entire soft keyboard; therefore, only a portion of the display appears to be improperly redrawn.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, Microsoft recommends that you use on of the following methods when you run PowerPoint presentations:
- Disable the power on password protection. To do so, tap Start, tap Settings, and then tap Control Panel. Double-tap Password (or HP Security), and then make sure that the Enable Password protection on resume check box is not selected.
- Run the device with external power and disable the option to suspend while on external power. To do so, tap Start, tap Settings, and then tap Control Panel. Double-tap Power Properties, and then make sure that the Enable suspend while on external power check box is not selected.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
