SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to recognize text in a Microsoft Office XP document by using optical character recognition (OCR), you may receive the following error message:
Cannot recognize text in this document. OCR was not successful.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the document contains a blank page or a page that is blank except for a small symbol or shape.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, remove any pages that do not contain text, and then repeat text recognition by using OCR.

To remove a page from within Microsoft Office Document Imaging, right-click the page, and then click Delete on the shortcut menu. On the confirmation message that appears, click Yes.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
