OFFXP: Only One Icon Appears on the Taskbar When "Windows in Taskbar" Option Is Selected (290364)

SYMPTOMS

When you have multiple documents open in any of the Office XP programs listing at the beginning of this article, only one icon for the program appears on the taskbar, even though the Windows in Taskbar option is selected (on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the View tab).

CAUSE

This problem occurs if both of the following conditions are true:
  • Your computer is running Microsoft Windows NT. -and-

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01, SP1 (or SP2) with the Windows Desktop Update was not installed on your computer before you installed Office.
NOTE: Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 does not install the Windows Desktop Update. For more information, please see the Internet Explorer 5 Ie.txt file.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, install the Windows Desktop Update. For more information about installing the Windows Desktop Update, please see the section titled "Installing or Upgrading the Windows Desktop Update" in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
