You receive a "The MST file does not correspond to the MSI file" error message when you use the Custom Installation Wizard (290230)

When you click Next in the Open the MST File dialog box of the Custom Installation Wizard (CIW), you may receive the following error message:
The MST file does not correspond to the MSI file.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when all of the following conditions are true:
- You open an existing transform (MST) in the CIW.
-and-
- You created the transform with one version of Office; for example, Office Standard.
-and-
- In the CIW, you use an .msi file from a different version of Office; for example, Office Professional.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
- Click OK to the error message.
- Click Back in the Open the MST File dialog box.
- In the Open the MSI File dialog box, select the .msi file from the version of Office that you used to create your transform.
If you click Name and path of MSI file to open in the Open the MSI File dialog box, you see a list of all the .msi files that you previously used in the CIW.
- Click Next.
- Click Open an existing MST file in the Open the MST File dialog box.
- Select your transform, and then click Next.
