OFFXPDEV: The Object Browser and the Find Symbol Results Windows Can Cause Microsoft Windows NT to Display a Blue Screen (290187)

SYMPTOMS

When you are viewing the Object Browser or the Find Symbol Results windows in the Microsoft Development Environment, you may receive a blue screen, and then the system quits.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:

Your operating system is Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server or Workstation with Service Pack 6.
The Colors display setting is set to True Color.
You have the following video driver configuration:
- ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP 2X
- Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
- Driver version: 5.2.040, 4.0.0
- Driver files: atirage.sys,atirage.dll

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, do one of the following:

Set the Colors display setting to something other than True Color.

Download the latest driver from ATI Technology Inc.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

On a computer that meets the conditions that are described in the "Cause" section of this article, open the Microsoft Development Environment.
On the View menu, point to Other Windows, and then click Object Browser. Note that you receive a blue screen, and then quits.
