OFFXP: Error Message When You Close Windows Explorer Window; Office Shortcut Bar Closes (290120)

SYMPTOMS
When you close a Microsoft Windows Explorer window in Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), you may receive an error message similar to the following:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you receive the following error message
MSOFFICE caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE at
0003:00001130.
and the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar closes.
NOTE: This problem does not occur on computers that are running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.
CAUSE
This problem can occur when the following conditions are true:
- You click the Office
Shortcut Bar menu in the upper-left corner of the Office
Shortcut Bar.
-and-
- While the Office Shortcut Bar menu is still displayed, you click the Close button (the "X") in the upper-right corner of Windows Explorer.
WORKAROUND
To prevent this problem from occurring, do not close Windows Explorer when
the Office Shortcut Bar menu for the Office Shortcut Bar is visible.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
