ACC2002: Cannot Create a Data Access Page Connected to SQL Server 6.5 (290081)

SYMPTOMS

You cannot create or view a data access page that is bound to Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5. If you are designing your page through an Access project (.adp), you may also receive the following error messages when you try to view the page in Microsoft Internet Explorer, although the page displays data when you view it in Access 2002
Data provider could not be initialized.
followed by:
[DBMSSOCN]General network error. Check your network documentation.
If you are designing a stand-alone page outside of an Access project, the connection object may appear broken.

CAUSE

You have Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.5 installed.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem download and install MDAC 2.6 or later from the following Microsoft Web site:

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Start Microsoft Access 2002 on a computer that has MDAC 2.5 installed.
  2. In the Task Pane, click Blank Data Access Page.
  3. In the Select Data Source dialog box, click New Source.
  4. Follow the steps in the Data Connection Wizard to create a new connection to a SQL Server 6.5 computer.
  5. In the Select Data Source dialog box, click Open. Note that the connection object at the top of the field list is broken.
