PRB: WME 7.0 Encoder Cannot Capture Internet Explorer at Resolutions over 800x600 (290073)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 7

This article was previously published under Q290073

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Screen capture for dial-up modems (28.8 Kbps) encoding profile, Windows Media Encoder version 7.0 cannot capture Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator at resolutions over 800x600 with 16-bit color depth or higher. This results in the following error message:
The encoder could not process enough data for acceptable output quality. This can be caused by one or more factors and may be fixed by:

- Using a more powerful computer.
- Using a different encoding profile with less demanding requirements.
- Refrain from running other applications during encoding.
The following error is logged in the event log:
The encoder was unable to keep up with the amount of supplied data.(0xC00D0BCC)
This problem may also occur in other applications.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use the Screen capture for e-mail and dual-ISDN (128 Kbps) profile, or reduce the color depth to 256 colors.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows Media Encoder 7.0.

MORE INFORMATION

In testing, we could not use a dual 800 MHz computer and refrain from running other applications while encoding to resolve this problem.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Close all applications except Internet Explorer and Windows Media Encoder 7.0.
  2. Make sure that the system is using at least 16-bit color and that the resolution for Internet Explorer is 800x600 or bigger.
  3. In Window Media Encoder 7.0, use the Screen capture for dial-up modems (28.8 Kbps) profile to start a screen capture of Internet Explorer. If you do not take further action on the Web page, Windows Media Encoder fails with the above-mentioned error message after approximately 30 seconds. Or, if you close Windows Media Encoder before the error message is displayed, a capture file with only a solid black video image is displayed.
