RPC dialog box appears when you work offline on VPN in Outlook 2002 (290003)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

This article was previously published under Q290003

SYMPTOMS

While you are using Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) service for a virtual private network (VPN) connection, a remote procedure call (RPC) dialog box displays the following information:
Outlook is retrieving data from the Microsoft Exchange Server ServerName. You can cancel the request or minimize this message to the Windows taskbar until Outlook closes the message automatically.
The Send/Receive synchronization occurs. The dialog box appears after the VPN connection ends.

This behavior can occur when you are working from a remote location on a computer that runs Microsoft Windows 98.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Outlook starts two tasks: the synchronization of offline folder storage (OST), which runs first, and the transmission of messages, which runs second. The first task starts and finishes correctly. In the second task, the spooler cycle starts and messages are sent successfully. When the last message is sent, the connection is ended, but the spooler thread is still processing and the informational message appears.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, click Cancel in the RPC dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The Send/Receive Group configuration is set to synchronize only the Inbox, the Send Items folder, and the Receive Items folder.
