SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade from Microsoft Outlook 98 Corporate or Workgroup (CW) to Outlook 2002, you may receive the following error message the first time that you add an Internet e-mail address to your Personal Address Book (PAB):
Microsoft Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, click either Send Error Report or Don't Send, and then restart Outlook.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The error message described in the "Symptoms" section of this article only occurs when all of the following conditions are true:
  • You upgraded from Outlook 98 to Outlook 2002.
  • You choose not to migrate your Personal Address Book to your contacts the first time that you ran Outlook.
  • You added the Internet e-mail address the first time that you ran Outlook 2002 after the upgrade.
This problem does not occur when you upgrade from any other version of Microsoft Outlook. Microsoft recommends that you migrate your Personal Address Book entries to your Contacts folder. See the online help file for additional information.

After Outlook restarts, you do not have the option to add an Internet e-mail address to your Personal Address Book. You can either add the address to your Contacts folder (the preferred method), or you can click Other address, and then add the Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) address.
