This article was previously published under Q289909 SYMPTOMS
Microsoft Visio 2000 may take several minutes to open a file that was created in Microsoft Visio 5.0. During this time, Visio may appear to stop responding.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when you open the Visio 5.0 file on a computer other than the one that was used to create the file. Visio 5.0 puts printer information for the computer in the file header.
Sometimes there may be items in a file from previous versions of Microsoft Visio that can contribute to performance issues when you open them--for example, extra unused Masters in the file may cause delays.WORKAROUND If the problem appears to be related to the printer setup, change the printer and output format to HTML or GIF format. To do this, follow these steps: - Open the drawing that you want.
- On the File menu, click Properties.
- Select the Output Format tab.
- Under Format Pages for, click HTML or GIF output.
- Click OK.
If the problem appears to be related to unused Masters in the drawing, remove the unused Masters from the Document Stencil. To do this, follow these steps: - Open the drawing that you want.
- On the menu, click Window, and then click Show Document Stencil.
- Select any Masters in the Document Stencil that you no longer need, right-click and then select Delete to remove them from the drawing.
Note If there are shapes linked to the Master, you receive the following warning message: Master(s) to be deleted are linked to objects on a drawing page. Break these links and delete the master(s)? If you click OK you will lose the Master, although the shapes that are based on the Master will still be present in the drawing. If you click Cancel, nothing is removed from the drawing. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.MORE INFORMATION
Visio 5.0 documents must go through a translation process in order to work correctly in Visio 2000. This process, which may take up to several minutes, slows down your computer significantly, so that it appears to stop responding.
