Sony Portable Computer Displays Orange and Black Screen and Stops Responding at Shutdown (289806)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to shut down a Sony portable computer that is running Windows Millennium Edition (Me), the screen may appear black with vertical orange bars, and the computer may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if Sony's battery management software, which displays how much power is available, is listed twice under the System.ini file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, click to clear the check box for the second instance of the software path in the [386Enh] folder:
  1. On the Start menu, click Run, and then type msconfig.
  2. Click OK, and then click the System.ini tab.
  3. Locate the [386Enh] folder, and then click to clear the second instance of the device=C:\PROGRA~1\BATTER~1\vsbs.386 check box.
  4. Click OK, and then restart the computer.
