This article was previously published under Q289800

SYMPTOMS

When you restart the computer after installing Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), you may find that the computer stops responding (hangs). This occurs on a computer equipped with a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! device.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because of the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! drivers, which are legacy (emulation) drivers.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, disable the Creative Labs device.

MORE INFORMATION

Legacy drivers (also known as emulation drivers) are drivers used in a real-mode MS-DOS-based environment, which is nonexistent in Windows Me. Disabling this driver will not affect the performance of the system in Windows Me or the sound in a virtual MS-DOS mode.
