This article was previously published under Q289798

SYMPTOMS

While you are installing Windows Millennium Edition (Me), the following error message may appear:
Largest exe file needs to be at least 400,000 (approx) bytes

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the drivers for the CD-ROM drive interfere with the Setup program.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, install a flat setup of Windows Me:
  1. Restart the computer by using the emergency boot disk, and then click either Start Computer Without CD-ROM Support or Minimal Boot.
  2. To run a Windows Me flat setup, type the following, and then press ENTER:

    cd meflat
  3. Type the following, and then press ENTER:

    setup

MORE INFORMATION

A flat folder is a copy of the Win9x folder from the Windows Me CD-ROM, installed on a drive or partition other than the installation drive or partition. The cabinet files in this folder are used during Setup and when you add or remove a Windows component (for example, a program for a game, a pointing device, or a screen saver).
