Error Message: Winsock Proxy Client Is Not Properly Installed (289778)

SYMPTOMS

When you click WSPClient in Control Panel, you may receive the following error message:
Winsock Proxy client is not properly installed

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the installation of Proxy 1.0 Client or Proxy 2.0 Client on Winsock 1.1 replaces the Winsock .dll files that add remote Winsock functionality. However, in Windows 2000, Windows File Protection prevents replacement of the .dll files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, upgrade the Proxy Server and Proxy Client to version 2.0.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

When you install Proxy 2.0 Client on a computer running Winsock 2.0, it leaves the existing .dll files and is implemented as a Winsock Layered Service Provider, intercepting Winsock calls. Windows 2000 supports Proxy 2.0 Client.
