The Server for NFS Service in Windows Services for UNIX Version 2.0 May Not Retrieve User Maps (289690)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 2.0

This article was previously published under Q289690

SYMPTOMS

The Server for NFS service of Windows Services for UNIX may not be able to retrieve user maps from the User Name Mapping service immediately.

CAUSE

If the Server for NFS service and the User Name Mapping service are on the same computer and the Server for NFS service is configured to use the User Name Mapping service that is local, the Server for NFS service may not be able to obtain user maps for one of the following reasons:
  • The Server for NFS service may start before the User Name Mapping service.
  • The User Name Mapping service may be using a UNIX User source across a slow link or WAN. If the User Name Mapping service is unable to retrieve mappings before the Server for NFS service sends a request, user maps are unavailable.

MORE INFORMATION

If either of the conditions that are listed in the "Cause" section of this article occur, the Server for NFS service logs the following Informational Event log in the System log.
Event ID: 1003
Source: NfsSvr

Description:

Mapping information could not be obtained from Username mapping. Another attempt will be made after 30 minutes.
If after 30 minutes the Server for NFS service is still unable to obtain user mappings, it could indicate a network communications problem or a problem with the user name mapping server configuration.
