This article was previously published under Q289679

SYMPTOMS

When you open the Small Business Server (SBS) console, you may receive the following prompt:

Enter Network Password

Please type your user name and password.
Site: localhost

User Name
Password
Domain

If you are an administrator and you type your user name and password, you can access the console.

If you press Cancel, you receive the following error message:
HTTP Error 401
401.2 Unauthorized: Logon Failed due to server configuration

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the SBS 4.5 console relies on Microsoft Internet Explorer settings to run properly. If the default settings for the Internet Explorer security zones have been modified, the console may not load properly, and you may be prompted for your user name and password.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, change the following settings in Internet Explorer 5:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and the double-click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab, click local Intranet zone, and then click the Sites button.
  3. Click to select the Include all local (intranet) sites not listed in other zones option.

NOTE: This option is the minimum requirement.
  4. Click Trusted Sites, and then click the Sites button.
  5. Click to clear the Require server verification check box.
  6. In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type http://localhost, and then click Add.
  7. Click to reselect the Require server verification check box, and then click OK.
