XL2000: "An Unexpected Error Has Occurred" When You Update Links from Web Browser (289629)

SYMPTOMS

When you open a workbook in your browser, and you choose to update links to linked workbooks, you receive the following error message:
An unexpected error has occurred.
Access is denied, and the links are not updated.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the workbook is hosted by a server that is configured to use Basic Authentication.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP-3).
