How to Update the Management Agent Form Set (289534)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Metadirectory Services 2.1
  • Microsoft Metadirectory Services 2.2

This article was previously published under Q289534

SUMMARY

When you upgrade Microsoft Metadirectory Services (MMS), the upgrade does not update the Management Agent form sets in the directory. Any new features that are added to the form sets do not appear in the Management Agent because the old form set has not been updated. This article describes how to load the latest MMS Management Agent form set into the directory.

MORE INFORMATION

When you click a Management Agent action button, this displays a set of forms known as a form set. Microsoft updates these Management Agent forms from release to release when Microsoft makes configuration changes to the Management Agents; however, you do not see these changes reflected in MMS after you complete the upgrade. The new forms are copied to the Zoomserv\data\dsgates\*MA_Name folder on the hard drive. Before you manually update the Management Agent form sets, back up your existing form set by recording your templates. By doing so, you will also back up the Management Agent form set. To update your form set with the latest Microsoft release, use the following steps. In this example, you are updating the Exchange Management Agent form set.
  1. Install the MMS Forms Designer component if you have not already done so. You can find this component in the following location:

    Zoomserv\Data\HTTP\Cabs\Fdv2.exe

  2. Start the MMS Forms Designer tool, click Formset, click Open, and then click From File.
  3. Browse to the Zoomserv\Data\Dsgate\Exchange folder, click the Exchange.frs file, and then click Open.
  4. In the Properties dialog box, click OK.
  5. Click Formset, click Save As, and then click To Directory.
  6. Click the drop-down arrow in the Distinguished Name box, and then log on to your MMS server when you are prompted to do so.
  7. After you log on, in the same Save as Formset dialog box, in the Distinguished Name box, click your Exchange Management Agent in the list. It will look something like this example:

    ma=Exchange01,DsaName=MMS,ou=Applications,dc=Microsoft,dc=com

  8. Click Save.
  9. Exit the MMS Forms Designer tool.
There is a second and easier way of updating the form set, this is only recommended if you have not yet customized the Management Agent. This method not only overwrites the existing form set but it will do the same with your Management Agent templates. Before using this method, follow the steps that are outlined in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q250479 that is referenced earlier in this article.

WARNING: By following these step, you are overwriting your Management Agent templates. Your Management Agent may not function properly if you overwrite any customized templates.
  1. Log on to your MMS server using MMS Compass and browse to your Management Agent.
  2. Select the Management Agent, and then click the Action button to display the Management Agent actions.
  3. Click Update MA.
  4. Click OK on the warning dialog box.
