OFFXPDEV: Setup Fails Silently When Password Is Changed for Account Running SQL Services (289516)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office XP Developer

This article was previously published under Q289516

SYMPTOMS

If you change the account password that SQL services are running under and then install the Workflow Services for SQL Server without changing the passwords that are stored in the computer's services, the Setup program of Microsoft Office XP Developer will not be able to restart the services and continue with the installation. Therefore, Setup fails silently, and the modSystem database is not created.

RESOLUTION

Change all account passwords in all locations at the same time, including SQL services passwords.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft OfficeXP Developer.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

  1. On a Windows 2000 Server, install the Microsoft Office XP Developer baseline and SQL Server 2000.
  2. Change the password for the account running SQL services.
  3. Do not shut down and restart the SQL services.
  4. Start the Microsoft Office XP Developer Setup program.
  5. Click Workflow Services for SQL Server.
  6. Enter a new password when you are prompted.
  7. Click Yes to stop SQL services. At this point, Setup finishes and no errors are reported. When you look at SQL Server, you see that all SQL services remain stopped. When you restart and examine the server, you see that the modSystem database was not created.
